The diving watch U212 is a professional mission timer which uses genuine German Submarine Steel, a material with extreme seawater-resistance and the highest level of non-magnetic properties. In the movement itself, functional reliability between -45 °C and +80 °C is ensured by the SINN special oil 66-228. And that's not all: with the captive diver's bezel, this diving watch is well-equipped to measure the duration of a dive accurately.

Fogging of the dial poses a safety risk when diving. To prevent this, we use EDR seals. This material, with its extreme chemical resistance and only a quarter of the gas permeability of conventional seals, prevents moisture from diffusing into the diving watch. A historical model returns: with the Model R500 limited to 300 pieces, we’re presenting a racing stopwatch with this extraordinary design in our range for the first time in many years. What sets this watch apart visually is the position of the crown at 12 o’clock and the push-pieces at 11 and 1 o’clock. Thanks to this arrangement, the Model R500 represents an analogy to the traditional stopwatch and motorsport. The tachymeter scale on the interior bezel is used to measure speeds. With the power reserve indicator at 12 o’clock, you can always see whether the timepiece is ready to go. The displays for hour, minute and subsidiary second and the stop functions for 12 hours, 30 minutes and 60 seconds are mounted in the centre for high-precision time measurement.

The unusual positions of the crown and push-pieces - also known as the “bullhead chronograph” due to the appearance of a bull’s head - requires an extremely demanding case construction. The dial slopes downwards from top to bottom and is thus angled towards the wearer, who can conveniently adjust the crown and push-pieces at the wrist.

The satinised case itself is made of high-strength titanium (Grade 5), which underlines the technical and contemporary interpretation of the watch and ensures a comfortable fit.

In order to satisfy these requirements, this mission timer was tested and certified by Aachen University of Applied Sciences in accordance with the technical standard for pilot watches (Technischer Standard Fliegeruhren – TESTAF). This ensures that the EZM 9 TESTAF is qualified for professional use as a pilot watch to the highest level and is evidenced with a certificate and the TESTAF quality seal on the dial.

Other features increasing the application quality of this pilot watch include the case, which is made of high-strength titanium. This particularly lightweight, extremely high-strength material offers great wearer comfort due to its non-allergenic properties. The surface of the case has also been hardened using TEGIMENT Technology, making it especially scratch-resistant. Sinn Spezialuhren has designed the Mission Timer (EZM) 7 S for use in the toughest conditions – it is particularly resilient to the penetration of water and dust, to scratches, temperature change and the influence of magnetic forces. Thanks to its colour-coded rotating bezel, the EZM 7 S is easy to operate, making it child’s play for people using breathing protection apparatus to set and read off key durations – from CSA to LPA.

Like our Sinn Spezialuhren diving watches, this captive rotating bezel can even be set when wearing gloves. The surface of the bead-blasted stainless-steel case is hardened using TEGIMENT Technology, making it especially scratch-resistant. This TEGIMENT case surface also provides the base for the high-quality Black Hard Coating (PVD coating). This combined process results in a highly practical benefit: applying the coating to the hardened stainless steel dramatically reduces wear and tear of the coloured coating. The sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective coating on both sides and luminous indices ensures optimum readability – by day or night. The EZM 10 TESTAF was the first watch worldwide that has been tested and certified to the Technical Standard for Pilot Watches (TESTAF) by the Aachen University of Applied Sciences. This guarantees that the EZM 10 TESTAF meets all time measurement requirements during flights operated under visual flight rules (VFR) and instrument flight rules (IFR) and that it is suitable for professional use as a pilot watch. This is attested to by a certificate and the TESTAF quality seal on the dial.

The declared aim in designing the EZM 10 TESTAF was to create a mission timer which meets all the requirements of a professional pilot watch in full.

If pilots decide to use a mechanical watch, its clear readability is of outstanding importance. As a consequence, at the heart of this chronograph is the SINN SZ01 movement which greatly facilitates the taking of stop times. Because the SZ01 is designed so that the watch can feature a centre-mounted, jump 60-minute stopwatch hand. This special technical feature yields two benefits: firstly, 60 minutes are now counted in one sweep of the hand instead of the usual 30 minutes, and secondly, the minute stop scale covers the entire diameter of the dial meaning that the measured times can be read off immediately.

The chronograph function displays (stop second and stop minute) are luminous meaning that the stopped and the current time remain perfectly visible even in the dark. This means that the EZM 10 TESTAF fulfils a key condition for IFR and VFR certification. The function is complemented by a backwards-counting pilot's bezel with minute ratcheting which features luminous indices, numerals and main marker. As in all of our pilot watches, this rotating bezel is captively linked to the case and has a luxury feature: the ring insert is made from high-grade sapphire crystal glass. However it is not only the clear readability which qualifies the EZM 10 TESTAF as a pilot watch, but also its extensive range of technological features.

The EZM 10 TESTAF has an impressive appearance yet is also a pleasure to wear - not least due to its bead blasted high-strength titanium case featuring TEGIMENT Technology. The EZM 10 TESTAF is therefore a striking pilot watch which delivers high performance while remaining suitable for daily use.

The EZM 10 is the result of an ambitious development project that was initiated in 2003. Throughout the entire time, our stated objective was to improve both the movement and the features of the watch. In constructing this new timepiece, our engineers pursued a challenging goal – namely to create a mission timer that optimally implemented the demands made on a pilot watch in terms of movement, dial and technology.

Easy legibility is one major reason pilots rely on mechanical watches. That is why these chronographs are made using the SINN SZ 01 movement that facilitates precise time measurement and excellent readability. The SZ 01 features a 60-minute jump minute counter in the centre of the dial. This technical innovation has two benefits: For one thing, 60 instead of the conventional 30 minutes are counted in one sweep of the hand. In addition, the minute-counting hand extends across the entire radius of the dial, making it easy to tell how much time has passed. Orange lights visible even in daylight indicate the functions of the chronograph. This makes it possible to read off stopped times even in the dark or in ultraviolet light, which is often used in cockpits. To ensure optimal functionality, the backwards-counting rotary pilot’s bezel with minute ratcheting has a luminous marking. Like all our pilot watches, the EZM has a captive bezel, but with an added luxury: The bezel insert is made of high-quality sapphire crystal glass.

But excellent readability is not the only aspect than makes the EZM 10 such a valuable and useful mission timer. The timepiece also boasts excellent SINN technological features such as DIAPAL for a lubricant-free escapement, Ar-Dehumidifying Technology for better resistance to humidity and freedom from fogging, as well as Temperature Resistance Technology that ensures workability at temperatures from -45 °C to +80 °C.

And the large-format push-pieces with Black Hard Coating on a tegimented surface are also extremely user friendly. They facilitate convenient operation of the chronograph, even with gloves on. The push-pieces are attached without screws and effectively sealed using our specially developed D3 system.

The case diameter of 46.5 mm gives the watch a formidable appearance, yet it is still comfortable to wear – not least because of its bead-blasted case made of robust titanium with TEGIMENT Technology, which is used here for the first time in a SINN watch. The crystal is made of valuable sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective coating on both sides.

With the EZM 10 we have succeeded in developing a distinctive pilot watch with excellent performance, suitable for everyday use, that is also resistant to low pressure and high pressure up to 20 bar. Thanks to its extraordinary technological characteristics, we offer a five-year warranty for this chronograph.

This mission timer has everything it takes to stand its ground even under the most adverse conditions. We have equipped it with the technology necessary for the most demanding of missions: such as Ar-Dehumidifying Technology for greater functional reliability and freedom from fogging and Temperature Resistance Technology for reliable function in temperatures of –45°C to +80°C. The bead-blasted surface of the stainless-steel case has also been hardened using TEGIMENT Technology, which forms the basis for the Black Hard Coating. This gives the chronograph a high-quality, modern and professional feel. This combination is the most durable form of black coating that is feasible according to the latest advancements in technology.

Stop function from the dial centre for optimal readability

To complete its core mission of unhindered and accurate time measurement, the EZM 1.1 S must have taker qualities and be able to function with instrument-like precision. The top priority is the need for outstanding readability at a glance – a prerequisite in time-critical situations – and even under the most adverse conditions. The EZM 1.1 S therefore features the perfect SINN chronograph movement: the SZ01. Based on the tried-and-tested Concepto C99001, the SZ01 is designed in such a way that the watch has a jump 60-minute stop hand from the dial centre. This enables stop times to be recorded more easily, quickly and accurately. Firstly, 60 rather than 30 minutes are counted in one sweep of the hand. Secondly, the minute stop scale covers the entire diameter of the dial.

Field-proof down to the last detail

Another useful instrument for recording cumulative time, besides the chronograph function, is the captive countdown pilot’s bezel with minute ratcheting, which can be rotated on both sides. Its captive design makes it virtually impossible for it to become detached from the case. In the interest of readability and timekeeping, all markings on the dial not relevant to the mission are muted in red. We have also carefully positioned the crown and push-piece on the left side of the case to prevent pressure on the back of the hand and keep the watch from getting caught, even in time-critical situations. All of this makes the EZM 1.1 S field-proof down to the last detail.

Special anniversary edition

Created for optimal readability, the design of the EZM 1.1 S stands on the shoulders of tried-and-tested models. This chronograph is actually a special limited edition (500 pieces) to mark the 25th anniversary of our mission timers. It all started in 1997 with the now legendary EZM 1 – a chronograph that set benchmarks in terms of functionality and clarity. Unsurprisingly really, considering it was designed for professional users who have to rely implicitly on their watch because the success of the mission and sometimes even human lives depend on it. Professional users such as the German Central Customs Support Group, ZUZ (Zentrale Unterstützungsgruppe Zoll), a special unit assigned to the German Customs Investigation Bureau – much like a special police commando unit.

Form follows function

This founding watch created the design DNA for all subsequent mission timers: the design should be based exclusively on its intended function, i.e. form follows function. Whether pilots, divers, firefighters, emergency doctors, rescue workers, special units of the German police force such as the GSG 9 and Germany’s commando frogman force KSM (Kommando Spezialkräfte der Marine), each mission timer is designed precisely according to this principle, based on individual requirements. The key is in working with the experts – in other words, with those who actually use the watches. Especially since the conditions in which our mission timers have to prove themselves are as varied as they are challenging: including wetness, magnetism, extreme heat and cold, major changes in temperature, vibrations, impact and knocks as well as aggressive liquids such as salt water or disinfectant. And often, everything at once. Basically, our mission timers have to withstand a great deal – especially when the going gets tough.

Since each mission timer is equipped with the relevant functions for the operation’s specific requirements, no two are the same. Yet they are united by one common principle of construction and design: focus on the key essentials in terms of outstanding readability and rapid time recording. In 1997, we introduced our first mission timer to the public – a chronograph that was virtually unbeatable in terms of functionality and clarity: the EZM 1. Made of titanium, the EZM 1 marked the ongoing development of a long range of mission timers for professional users. The first users we cooperated with were officials from what was then the newly established German Central Customs Support Group, ZUZ (Zentrale Unterstützungsgruppe Zoll), a special unit assigned to the German Customs Investigation Bureau – much like a special police commando unit. Since accurate time measurement is essential for such units when carrying out what can sometimes be extremely tricky operations, the officials opted for a highly robust chronograph with instrument-like precision. The number one requirement was the need for outstanding readability at a glance – a prerequisite in time-critical situations – and even under the most adverse conditions. The EZM 1 was thus the result of a direct collaboration between users and our engineers and master watchmakers. To mark the 20th anniversary of this mission timer, we are presenting the 500-piece limited-edition EZM 1.1 and thus continuing the tradition of the EZM 1.

Model for the SZ01: the Lemania 5100

One special feature of the chronograph is the crown and push-piece on the left side of the case to prevent pressure on the back of the hand and keep the watch from getting caught, even in time-critical situations. The SZ01 chronograph movement developed in house and used in the EZM 1.1 is based on the tried-and-tested Valjoux 7750 and designed in such a way that the watch has a centre-mounted, jump 60-minute stop hand. This makes it even easier and quicker to record stop times more accurately. The new design is modelled on the clear and precise readability of the renowned Lemania 5100 movement, which is no longer available. In terms of readability, the SZ01 offers two advantages: 60 minutes – rather than the usual 30 minutes – are counted in one sweep of the hand and the minute stop scale covers the entire diameter of the dial. In addition to the chronograph function, the pilot’s bezel can be rotated on both sides and used to record cumulative time. The captive countdown bezel features minute ratcheting. To further aid readability and recording of the time, all markings on the dial not relevant to the mission are muted in red.

Technical enhancements

Professional users must be able to rely on their equipment even in the toughest conditions – and the same applies to their watch. The EZM 1.1 therefore features a range of technologies. For example, Temperature Resistance Technology ensures reliable function at a temperature range of –45°C to +80°C while Ar-Dehumidifying Technology ensures greater functional reliability and freedom from fogging. The case itself is made of bead-blasted stainless steel, giving it a matt silk finish which prevents distracting reflections. The surface of the case has also been hardened using TEGIMENT Technology, making it especially scratch-resistant.

The mission timer celebrates 20 years

Wristwatches are also an important piece of equipment for other professionals. In addition to the aforementioned ZUZ, these include pilots, divers, firefighters, emergency doctors, rescue workers, special units of the German police force such as the GSG 9 and

Germany’s commando frogman force KSM (Kommando Spezialkräfte der Marine). It is for these professional users, who are very often deployed to protect their fellow citizens, that we have been developing mission timers for the past 20 years. From the EZM 1 to the EZM 16, all watches are strictly designed to meet the demands of a defined mission.

Form follows function

The principle on which our mission timers are based – form follows function – originates from architecture, but has also gradually been applied to product design in general. According to this principle, the design should be based exclusively on its intended function or purpose and incorporate new materials and technologies. In this respect, our company has gradually become a technology and case expert, manufacturing and fitting our mission timers with the best possible materials and components. To achieve this, it is often worth indulging in a little lateral thinking to see what is going on in other industrial sectors and fields of science. Only then can basic innovations be adapted for our watches, too.

Widely varying operational conditions

The use of modern technologies and materials is thereby not an end in itself, but rather a result of widely varying operational conditions. Each mission timer has been developed for a specific user group with highly individual requirements when it comes to their watch. Our mission timers must be able to withstand the most varying, challenging and complex external conditions, including wetness, magnetism, extreme heat and cold, major changes in temperature, vibrations, impact and knocks as well as aggressive liquids such as salt water or disinfectant. And often enough, everything at once. Basically, these watches have to withstand a great deal – especially when the going gets tough.

Optimum readability and rapid time-recording

Key to ensuring such functionality when developing these timepieces is our cooperation with experts in the respective fields, i.e. those actually using and relying on the high performance of the timepieces out in the field. Quite often these experts are faced with critical situations, where minutes and seconds become a matter of life and death – both their own and other people’s. It is these users and even more so the respective conditions in which they operate that define and determine form and functionality. Many questions arise in the beginning: How can we better protect the watches? What will be required of the watch in extreme situations? What must it be able to withstand? Which functions are particularly important for this particular mission? Consequently, no two mission timers are the same – especially given the fact that each mission timer is equipped with functions relevant to the demands of its specific mission. Identical construction and design features are apparent, however. One general principle applies to them all: focus on the key essentials in terms of outstanding readability and rapid time-recording.

When Sinn Spezialuhren was founded in 1961, cockpit instruments and the precision they must maintain even under extreme conditions played a special role. They inspired Helmut Sinn, the company’s founder and a pilot himself, to create his first aviation chronographs.
